Maple Bay Beach: A Northern Michigan Gem

Nestled along the shimmering waters of Grand Traverse Bay, just a short drive from Traverse City, lies a true Northern Michigan treasure: Maple Bay Beach. This isn't your typical bustling beach with concession stands and endless crowds. Instead, Maple Bay offers a more serene and natural escape, making it a favorite for those seeking peace, stunning views, and a touch of adventure.

The Hike to Maple Bay Beach

Part of Maple Bay's charm is the delightful journey required to reach its sandy shores. While there's a small parking area right off US-31, the true experience begins by taking the scenic trail through the Maple Bay Natural Area.

The main trail is a relatively easy and family-friendly hike, winding through a beautiful hardwood forest. Depending on the path you choose, it can be anywhere from a 0.5-mile to a 1.5-mile walk to the beach. The descent to the bay is gradual, offering glimpses of the turquoise waters through the trees as you get closer.

We went in late August and the hike was short but nice and shaded with all the trees. Once you make your way out, you gradually step into sand until the beach appears which is beautiful. We were there around noon and it wasn't busy at all. I would say to wear layers because the water can be chilly. It was a bit chilly when we were there (in August).

Things to Do at Maple Bay Beach

Once you emerge from the woods onto the shoreline, you'll understand why Maple Bay is so beloved. The beach itself is a mix of soft sand and smooth, colorful stones, perfect for skipping or collecting. The water is typically crystal clear and shallow near the shore, making it ideal for various activities:

  • Swimming and Wading: On a warm summer day, the inviting waters of Grand Traverse Bay are perfect for a refreshing dip. The gradual slope into the water makes it safe for children to splash and play.

  • Picnicking: Pack a delicious lunch and spread out your blanket on the sand. There are no facilities here, so come prepared with everything you need for a relaxing meal with an unbeatable view.

  • Stone Collecting and Beachcombing: Maple Bay is famous for its smooth, uniquely colored stones. Spend an hour or two searching for your next prized possession or simply enjoying the variety of natural treasures washed ashore.

  • Kayaking and Paddleboarding: The calm waters of the bay make it an excellent spot to launch a kayak or paddleboard. Glide across the surface, exploring the shoreline and enjoying a different perspective of the surrounding natural beauty.

  • Photography: With its stunning vistas, clear waters, and lush backdrop, Maple Bay is a photographer's dream. Capture the vibrant sunsets, the tranquil morning light, or simply the joy of a day spent by the water.

  • Relaxation: Perhaps the most popular activity at Maple Bay is simply unwinding. Read a book, listen to the gentle lapping of the waves, or just soak in the peaceful atmosphere. It's the perfect antidote to a busy schedule.

Maple Bay Beach offers a genuine slice of Northern Michigan's natural splendor. It's a beautiful beach with the turquoise waters, colorful stones, and a pretty hike on the way in. You can enjoy it by yourself or have a little lunch date with the family.
