Nestled within the stunning Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Michigan, the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive offers a 7.4 mile journey through a landscape of rolling sand dunes, lush forests, and breathtaking lake vistas. Named after local lumberman Pierce Stocking, who built the road in the 1960's to share the areas natural beauty. This drive is a must if you are in the area or visiting the Sleeping Bear Dunes,


What To Expect

This one-way route features 12 designated scenic stops, each offering a unique perspective on the surrounding landscape. As you wind through the beech-maple forests and open dune areas, you'll be treated to a series of spectacular sights.

Key Stops to Look Out For:

  • Covered Bridge (Stop 1): Your journey begins with a picturesque covered bridge, a charming nod to the drive's history. It's a popular spot for photos, especially during the fall.

  • Glen Lake Overlook (Stop 2): This stop provides a sweeping view of the stunning Big and Little Glen Lakes, known for their remarkably clear, turquoise waters.

Practical Tips for Your Visit

  • Operating Hours: The road is typically open to vehicles from mid-April through November, from 9:00 AM until 30 minutes after sunset.

  • Activities: While it's primarily a driving tour, you can get out at the stops for photos, short walks, and to read interpretive signs. The drive is also popular for biking and, in the winter, the unplowed road becomes a popular cross-country ski trail.

  • Pace: Plan for at least two hours to complete the drive, allowing time to stop at all 12 overlooks and take in the scenery.
